CM Cable (Communications Cable)
Full Name: General Purpose Communications Cable.
The CM rating, defined in NEC Article 800, designates cables for general indoor use in areas without strict fire code restrictions. Suitable for in-wall installations in homes or single-story commercial buildings, CM-rated cables provide a fundamental level of protection by limiting the spread of fire along their length.
- Key Characteristic: This is the minimum flame-retardant rating required for communication cables. It passes a basic vertical flame test (NFPA 262).
- Typical Use: General purpose areas such as office workstations, isolated cable runs, or in single-floor residential installations. It is not allowed to be installed in air handling spaces (plenums) or as vertical risers between floors without conduit.
