CMP Cable

CMP Cable (Plenum Rated Cable)

Full Name: Communications Plenum Cable.

CMP cable, the highest fire-safety-rated cable, is specifically designed for installation in air handling (plenum) spaces. Since these spaces circulate air throughout a building, they can quickly spread toxic smoke or flames from a fire. CMP cable is constructed with special materials that severely limit flame spread and produce minimal smoke, making it a critical component for meeting strict building code requirements in such environments.

  • Key Characteristic: This is the highest fire safety rating. It is designed with special materials (often FEP or PTFE) that produce very low smoke and are highly flame-retardant. It passes a stringent test (UL 910/NFPA 262) measuring flame spread and smoke density.
  • Typical Use: Installed in air handling spaces (plenums), such as the open space above a suspended ceiling or below a raised floor used for air circulation. This is crucial because toxic smoke from a burning cable could spread rapidly through a building’s ventilation system.
